A man blind for ten years can now see again. Watch this life changing moment at Batieka Specialist Hospital.

Ten Years of Darkness End as Patient Regains Sight

This moment stands as one of the most powerful examples of the sight saving work being carried out at Batieka Specialist Hospital. A patient who had been crippled, deaf, mute, and completely blind for ten long years has now regained his vision through the skill and dedication of our medical team.

His recovery represents far more than a medical procedure. It is a restoration of hope, dignity, and independence. It shows what is possible when compassionate care, modern expertise, and community centered healthcare come together with a single purpose.

This transformation reflects the commitment of Batieka Specialist Hospital to bring advanced eye care to people who have lived with preventable blindness for far too long. We are devoted to changing lives, one restored vision at a time, and each success story strengthens our resolve to reach even more individuals across the region.

Restoring Sight and Hope: Dr. Gilbert Bonsaana’s Mission to Fight Blindness in Northern Ghana

At Tamale Teaching Hospital in Ghana, a powerful movement is underway—led by Dr. Gilbert Batieka Bonsaana and his dedicated team, in partnership with the Cure Blindness Project. Their mission? To restore sight and transform lives through free cataract surgeries and community education.

Dr. Gilbert Batieka Bondaana

Over 2,000 Screenings, 600 Surgeries—All at No Cost

This year alone, Dr. Bonsaana’s team is screening more than 2,000 individuals and performing 600 free cataract surgeries. These procedures are not just medical interventions—they are life-changing moments for people who have lived in darkness, often for years.

“People still have misconceptions,” says Dr. Bonsaana. “So we are doing our part. But sometimes, priority is not placed on eye disease by the powers that be. We hope that with time, priorities will be placed on some of these things so that we will educate them more on eye conditions.”

Fighting Misconceptions, One Eye at a Time

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness globally—but the condition is reversible with a simple surgical procedure. Unfortunately, misinformation and fear often prevent people from seeking help. Dr. Bonsaana and his team are working tirelessly to change that narrative, offering not just treatment, but education and hope.

Spread the Word: Eye Health Matters

Blindness isn’t always permanent. With early detection and timely treatment, many forms of vision loss can be prevented or reversed. That’s why Dr. Bonsaana is urging the public and policymakers alike to prioritize eye care.

    1. Encourage your loved ones to get regular eye checkups.
    2. Share accurate information about eye diseases.
    3. Support initiatives that bring healthcare to underserved communities.

Together, we can help more people see a brighter future.
